When buying a new puppy or dog via the internet, you must be careful. Unfortunately there are alot of scammers who do not actually have any pups or dogs for free or for sale.
UNLESS YOU VERIFY THAT THE PERSON IS A REAL BREEDER OR PERSON, DO NOT SEND MONEY THROUGH WESTERN UNION, ESPECIALLY IF THEY LIVE OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES.
*A real breeder has a website where you can read customer comments, view photos and other information.
*A real breeder will provide you with their Kennel Club information that you can verify by phone.
*A real breeder requires that you complete a canine application and will provide you with their home address that is within the United States, that you can easily verify.
Presently there is a cashier's/money order check scam going on and the breeders are seeing the bulk of it. Unfortunately, breeders and those who want to buy from a breeder are being ripped off equally. Breeders should require a completed application to be filled out. Never accept CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS! We had someone use a credit card that was apparently stolen....but we were not aware of it until 10 days AFTER the dog was flown to the person.
There was a charge back and we lost the dog and the money! Fortunately for us, we found out before the entire amount was taken out of our bank account and we notified the bank and we didn't lose that much....but still....our attorney told us it would cost us more to get the dog back than the amount of money that was owed. WE IMMEDIATELY CLOSED OUR ACCOUNT...CHANGED ACCOUNTS AND STOPPED TAKING CREDIT CARDS! One bad apple ruined the entire cart! DO NOT ACCEPT OUT OF STATE PERSONAL CHECKS FROM PEOPLE WHO IMMEDIATELY WANT TO PICK UP A PUPPY. We had a woman who sent us a check (years ago) from out of state....had put a stop payment on it while the check was enroute via mail, to us....when we got it...we did not know it had a stop payment on it...deposited it into our bank account and luckily for us....the day before she was going to come and get the puppy, we found out there was a stop payment on the check. The puppy was going to flown out to them but luckily for us, we found out the check was no good, the day before the dog was to fly out. If someone wants to send you a check, make sure that you have a bank branch in your area, where you can immediately go and verify the check is good and cashable. Otherwise, a breeder can easily be ripped off. Never accept a store money order! We actually were sent a copy of a store money order from someone who had sent a breeder the store money order.....it said it was for $880 with a new date on it...however, when the breeder went to cash the store money order....60 days later, her bank told her that the money order was actually a fake! It was originally for the amount of $18.80 and had been cashed months earlier than when she had recieved it. The bank made HER repay the $880 out of her bank account and she was out the puppy AND her money! If you accept a store money order...wait for 60 days before letting the dog go because it could be a forged, washed store money order that is no good! The safest method is CASH AND CARRY or having the person who wants to buy from you, send you a small deposit via Western Union and they can bring the rest in cash when they pick up the puppy or dog. Otherwise, accept only American Postal Money Orders or personal checks on bank accounts that you have a branch in your local area. It is not just people wanting to buy a puppy who are being ripped off....it's the breeders and the people who want to buy, alike.
*We require a canine application that asks for a vet reference where we can verify they are who they say they are.
*Some breeders require your work telephone number so they can verify you work in the United States or are who you say you are.
*Call the Kennel Club to verify the person you want to buy a dog from is an actual breeder who is registered with the kennel club. If they are not registered with a kennel club, don't buy from them because you can get ripped off.
*Verify the breeder has a veterinarian. You can ask for the name of their veterinarian and their phone number so that you can make sure they are who they say they are.
BE CAREFUL ABOUT "free dog" ADS. If you do not live in the state where the dog is being advertised and the dog is free....the person may want you to send them money to pay for "shipment" when in fact, they do not have any free pets at all but are just ripping you off for the shipment fee. Only get a FREE dog that is within driving distance or get an actual home address that you can visit. Scammers are using many different methods to rip the buyers and sellers off, alike. Be careful.
